Top 10 Popular Coming-of-Age Movies You Can Actually Watch Right Now
1. Spiderman: No Way Home (Release date - July 17)
We have been looking forward to the conclusion of Tom Holland’s tenure as Peter Parker aka Spiderman since his last film was Spiderman Homecoming, and now it looks like he will get another solo adventure as the web-slinger on July 17th, 2022. The movie will star Tobey Maguire, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Rachel McAdams, and Andrew Garfield in roles that were previously shared between the titular hero and his sidekick, Miles Morales. Of course, there’s no telling where the story will take us as we wait to see how Tony Stark gets wind of things, but one thing’s pretty clear, fans will be tuning into theaters when Spiderman: No Way Home opens in theaters.
2. Jurassic World Dominion (Release date - July 19)
A long-awaited sequel to 2016’s first instalment of Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur-loving franchise, Jurassic Park, will come out in the same cinema giant’s own universe in November 30th, 2022. This time around has proven to be slightly less anticipated than its predecessor, and fans have speculated since before the pandemic began about which dinosaurs would be appearing in the new instalment. While we won’t know what is going to happen until the official trailer drops online, director Colin Trevorrow has teased that he intends to use an element of mystery to keep audiences guessing. With such exciting plans and potential twists, the latest installment from Michael Crichton could be worth checking out.
3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Release date - July 22)
Marvel Studios announced at San Diego Comic Con earlier this month that the studio had started working on Phase 5 of the cinematic universe. One of the biggest developments announced at SDCC was that writer/director Sam Raimi would reprise his role as genius scientist Dr Stephen Strange in the second iteration of the multiverse of madness with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Albus Dumbledore. Unfortunately, Cumberbatch failed to make an appearance at DC Universe Convention this year due to COVID-19 related scheduling issues, but he has been confirmed as returning to play the infamous Sorcerer Supreme in Sony Pictures’ planned MCU adaptation of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As far as we currently know, production is scheduled to begin with filming expected to wrap sometime in 2022, though casting will likely not begin until then. It’s impossible to say anything unless they actually finish shooting.
4. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Release date - August 1)
After being delayed numerous times throughout 2021 and most of 2022, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will finally hit theatres in September 2022, albeit without any sort of promotional push. Fans were given plenty of reasons to be excited about the upcoming spin-off following the massive success of Netflix’s “The Witcher” show, which introduced viewers to wuxia fantasy culture and made several key characters memorable including Geralt of Rivia and Lady Guinevere. Hopefully, sequels will continue in the vein of ‘The Witcher’, while also introducing original heroes like Li Shang, who is a Chinese character that appeared in countless classic games, as well as newcomers such as Tristram Night, Mantis Blades, King Solomon, and others. Despite the popularity of other shows within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang Chi promises to stand apart amongst the rest by focusing on themes and storylines that have little to do with those in similar franchises. Shang Chi promises to deliver more action packed drama and high stakes combat in every episode.
5. Minions: Rise of Gru (Release date - December 4)
The highly anticipated animated series Minions: Rise of Gru officially landed on Disney Plus back in June, but fans haven’t really stopped speculating about what will happen with the final two episodes. According to the press briefing held at Disneyland, Minions: Rise of Gru has been expanded considerably, giving it more content to fill in the gaps left by a lack of live action, animation, and feature films. In addition, Kevin Fiege has expressed interest in developing spin-offs that introduce different versions of each main team member, allowing for interesting narrative differences. What we know about the overall plot is that the final two episodes will focus heavily on how Max and his friends overcome adversity in order to become heroes and achieve their ultimate goal of saving New York City. These stories are sure to set the stage for what should come in Minions: The Series, which may or may not be called Minions, depending on the company behind them.
6. Avengers: Infinity War (Release date - March 8, 2022)
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, fans have been waiting to discover the identity of Thano for nearly three years now, hoping it would finally reveal itself during the hotly anticipated finale of Avengers Endgame in May after the fourth act break. However, recent reports stated that the creators are still waiting to find his name, meaning that whatever happened in Infinity War did not need to be revealed on screen. In fact, much like Loki back in 2019, whose identity was known through multiple trailers, we will likely never see Thanos again after his apparent death in Endgame. Perhaps that means that we will see him again in future seasons of WandaVision. But with the promise of more Marvel projects in development, who knows? Maybe I will see him again when I go on vacation around Christmas.
7. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Season Two (Release date - May 24, 2022)
The news of the return of Hayden Christensen as Jedi Master Luke Skywalker’s son in season two of “The Mandalorian” drew mixed reviews from diehard fans who don’t want to see the younger version of Darth Vader ever see live-action television again. Luckily, Episode six will kick off the popular new era of the beloved Star Wars anthology series and gives us something everyone will be missing… A lightsaber battle! However, let’s not forget Rogue One Season Four and all of the other awesome “Star Wars” stuff that came along with it. That takes us to May 2024 for the newly launched Disney+ show, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” which may finally give us answers as to who exactly Obi-Wan Kenobi is. While Lucasfilm continues to hold onto the rights to tell the old tales of the Jedi Order, there are rumors that there are already leaks of a Disney+ series involving the rebel cause, perhaps a prequel or continuation, possibly even taking place somewhere in canon timeline. Whatever happens, fans can expect more adventures in the galaxy far, far away!
8. Resident Evil Village (Release date - October 16, 2022)
If nothing else, Resident Evil Village is a great chance to revisit iconic villains from Capcom’s Resident Evil saga, adding fresh faces to the roster when compared to the likes of Ethan Winters and Jill Valentine. The game received strong response from players while also establishing some impressive new ideas. At the forefront of Resident Evil Village is the female antagonist V, portrayed by actress Rebecca Hall, who leads a ragtag band of survivors against a relentless villain in hopes of stopping her evil sister, who is responsible for committing heinous serial murders. V is played by Laila Ali and will also appear in the remake of Ghost Recononnect, making her the perfect option to portray such a formidable figure. Meanwhile, there’s the protagonist K, voiced by Keita Takahashi, who struggles with PTSD post his experience fighting alongside a group of rogue hackers. Together, the trio form an unlikely alliance against an evil corporation that seeks to cover up the horrific crimes committed by a former colleague. Although it isn’t yet confirmed whether they’ll fight again in “Resident Evil Village Return," fans can certainly look forward to seeing more of the zombie horde in some capacity.
9. Dune (Release date - Q3 2022)
When Denis Villeneuve took over directing duties for Denis Villeneuve Productions' Dune recently, critics had mixed reactions regarding a film featuring Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel. Critics initially praised the direction with praise for cinematography while highlighting slow pacing and very uninteresting dialogue. Then the cast and crew went ahead and revealed that Denis Villeneuve had a special cameo starring Daniel Craig, but what was supposed to be scenes with the love interest were cut so as to save money. Thankfully, we will have the final script soon, and hopefully the footage will be released in time for a theatrical release sometime in the fall. For now, this means we can enjoy the music video directed by Damien Chazelle which features the song "The Beast" featured prominently in the opening credits of the film. When we finally see this sequence in the new “Dune,” we will surely be in awe! Besides that, Denis Villeneuve and Ron Howard have been quite successful with their work on HBO's Westworld. Their previous collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson on Arrival also proved fruitful, releasing several successful box office hits. And if anything
